Dryer fires have become a more common occurrence over the past few years. Several studies since 2008 have stated that around 1,200 dryer fires occur in the U.S. every year. The main cause? Not cleaning out the lint trap regularly.
It is a shame that so many fires could be prevented by just one or two simple maintenance items that only take a brief moment to do. I see these situations all too often on home inspections here in CT. So in the interest of you as my client, here is a brief list of things you can do to help prevent dryer fires:
Clean the lint trap/screen after EVERY time you use the dryer
If you use a gas dryer, be sure to have a professional occasionally check for gas leaks
Check the dyer vent head on the exterior and clean the hose periodically
Clean the actual inside of the dyer, as the lint trap doesn’t get all of the lint
Keep the area around the dryer free of clutter and debris
